iPad Screen Repair in Sacramento: Cracked, Unresponsive & More

iPads are among the most drop-prone devices people own. Their large glass surface, often used without a case, combined with the fact that they're handed to children and carried in bags without dedicated padding, makes screen damage a near-inevitability for a lot of owners. The good news is that a cracked or unresponsive iPad screen is almost always repairable — and often at a fraction of the cost of a new device.

At MNM Computers in Citrus Heights, we repair iPad screens across all models and generations. Here's what you need to know about iPad screen damage, what types of repairs we handle, and what the process looks like.

Why iPad Screen Damage Is So Common

iPads face a unique combination of factors that make screen damage more likely than with phones:

  • Larger glass surface area. More glass means more area to crack on impact. A force that would only chip a phone screen often produces a significant crack pattern across an iPad's larger display.
  • Frequent use by children. iPads are the go-to device for kids — and kids drop things. Many of the iPad screen repairs we perform involve devices that were being used by younger family members without a protective case.
  • Thinner glass on mini models. The iPad mini's compact form factor uses thinner glass to maintain its lightweight feel, which also makes it more susceptible to cracking from drops or pressure.
  • Casual handling without cases. People who would never carry their phone without a case often use their iPad bare, particularly at home where a drop onto tile or hardwood floors is a common accident.

The result is that cracked iPad screens are one of the most common repairs we see — and one of the most cost-effective repairs you can make on a device that's otherwise fully functional.

Types of iPad Screen Issues We Fix

📺

Cracked glass only

Sometimes a drop cracks the outer glass but leaves the display picture and touch function intact. In these cases, only the digitizer glass needs replacement — a less expensive repair than a full screen assembly. However, cracked glass should still be repaired promptly: sharp glass edges can cause cuts, and debris entering through cracks can damage the LCD over time.

📺

LCD damage underneath the glass

A drop that produces black spots, bleeding ink-like patches, or a display that's partially or fully dark has damaged the LCD panel beneath the glass. LCD damage typically requires replacing the full screen assembly. The image may be perfect in some areas but have a "dead zone" where the impact was absorbed.

📺

Touch / digitizer unresponsive

If the display looks fine but touch input is not registering — or only registers in certain areas of the screen — the digitizer layer has been damaged. This can happen from impact or from pressure. The result is an iPad you can see but can't use. Digitizer replacement restores full touch functionality.

📺

Backlight bleeding

Uneven patches of brightness visible against dark backgrounds, or bright spots around the screen edges, indicate damage to the backlight layer or LCD lamination. This is more common after pressure damage than impact damage, and typically requires a full display replacement to fully resolve.

iPad Pro Repair — Is It Different?

Yes — iPad Pro repairs are more complex and more expensive than standard iPad and iPad Air repairs, for several reasons:

  • Face ID complexity. Newer iPad Pro models use Face ID, which is housed in the top bezel and connected to the display assembly. Replacing the screen without disrupting Face ID function requires careful handling of the TrueDepth camera module and its flex cables.
  • ProMotion display technology. iPad Pro screens use Apple's ProMotion technology with adaptive 120Hz refresh rates. The replacement display must match this specification; lower-quality aftermarket screens that lack ProMotion support result in a degraded experience.
  • Laminated display assembly. iPad Pro screens use a fully laminated display where the glass and LCD are bonded together. There's no separating the glass from the display — the entire assembly must be replaced as a unit.
  • Higher parts cost. The screens themselves cost more, which is reflected in the repair price. However, compared to the cost of a new iPad Pro ($799–$1,299+), repair is still extremely economical.

We take extra care with iPad Pro repairs and only use display assemblies that maintain Face ID functionality and ProMotion compatibility. We'll be upfront about this during your diagnostic.

How Long Does iPad Screen Repair Take?

For most iPad models, screen repair takes 2 to 4 hours from the time you drop the device off. In many cases, if you bring it in the morning, you can pick it up the same afternoon. iPad Pro models — especially the 12.9-inch Pro — may take slightly longer due to the more complex disassembly required, and in some cases we may need to order a specific screen if we don't have your exact model in stock, which could extend the turnaround to the next business day. We'll always give you an accurate timeline when you come in.

What Does iPad Screen Repair Cost?

iPad screen repair at MNM Computers ranges from $79 to $249 depending on the model:

  • Standard iPad (6th–10th gen): Typically $79–$119
  • iPad Mini: Typically $89–$129
  • iPad Air: Typically $99–$149
  • iPad Pro 11": Typically $149–$199
  • iPad Pro 12.9": Typically $179–$249

These are approximate ranges — the exact price depends on the generation and the extent of the damage. We provide a firm quote at the time of your free diagnostic, before any work begins.

Do We Offer Data Backup Before Repair?

Yes. If your iPad is still partially functional before repair, we can assist with backing up your data to iCloud or locally to a computer before we begin. We recommend doing this before any screen repair as a precaution — while the repair itself does not erase data, having a recent backup ensures your photos, notes, and app data are protected against any unforeseen complication. If your iPad is completely unresponsive, we'll discuss backup options during the diagnostic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my iPad with a cracked screen while I wait for repair?

It depends on the damage. If only the outer glass is cracked but touch and display still work, you can use the iPad — but be careful of sharp glass edges, and avoid letting moisture or debris enter through the cracks. If the LCD is damaged or touch is unresponsive, you'll want to bring it in promptly, as the damage can worsen over time.

My iPad has a cracked screen but otherwise works fine. Is it worth repairing?

In almost every case, yes. Cracked glass exposes the interior of the device to dust and moisture, and the cracks tend to spread and worsen over time — especially with continued use. Repairing it while only the glass is cracked is significantly cheaper than waiting until the LCD is also damaged. The repair also protects your fingers from cuts on sharp glass edges.

Will my Apple Pencil still work after an iPad screen repair?

Yes. When we replace an iPad Pro or compatible iPad Air screen, we use display assemblies that maintain full Apple Pencil compatibility. The digitizer layer that supports Pencil input is part of the replacement screen assembly. We test Apple Pencil functionality after every applicable repair before returning the device.
