Water Damage Phone Repair in Sacramento: What to Do in the First 60 Seconds
It happens in an instant. One moment your iPhone or Samsung Galaxy is fine, and the next it's at the bottom of the toilet, the kitchen sink, or the pool. Water damage is one of the most stressful device emergencies — but what you do in the first 60 seconds determines whether your phone survives.
As Citrus Heights' device repair specialists since 1994, we've restored hundreds of water-damaged iPhones, Samsung Galaxy phones, and other devices. Here's exactly what to do — and what to avoid — to give your phone the best chance of survival.
🚨 Time Is Critical
Water damage spreads quickly through circuit boards. Every minute your phone stays powered on with liquid inside increases the risk of permanent damage. Act immediately — then get to a repair shop as fast as possible.

✅ Power it off immediately
If your phone is still on, power it off right now. Electricity + water = short circuits. Even if the screen is working, turn it off to prevent internal damage from spreading.
✅ Remove the case and SIM card
Get the case off to allow any trapped water to escape. Remove the SIM card tray too — water can pool around it. Keep the SIM card itself safe and dry.
✅ Gently shake out excess water
Hold the phone with the charging port facing down and gently shake it to dislodge any water sitting in the port or speaker grille. Don't be too aggressive — gentle is key.
✅ Pat dry with a soft cloth
Use a soft, absorbent cloth to pat (not rub) the exterior dry. Get into the ports and speaker grilles carefully. Microfiber cloths work best.
✅ Bring it to a repair shop ASAP
Don't wait to "see if it works." Corrosion begins forming within hours. The sooner a professional can open and clean the device, the better your chances of a full recovery.
❌ What NOT to Do
❌ Do NOT put it in rice
This is the most common mistake we see. Rice does not absorb moisture effectively from electronics, and rice dust can get into ports and cause additional problems. It wastes precious time when the phone needs professional cleaning now.
❌ Do NOT use a hair dryer
Heat can warp internal components and melt solder connections. Even on a cool setting, forced air can push water deeper into the device. Avoid all heat sources.
❌ Do NOT charge it
Charging a wet phone can cause a short circuit and permanently destroy the logic board. Don't plug it in until a technician has confirmed it's completely dry and safe.
❌ Do NOT keep turning it on to check
Every time you power on a wet phone, you risk shorting additional components. Resist the urge to check if it still works — keep it off and get professional help.
❌ Do NOT wait days before getting help
Even if your phone seems to work initially after water exposure, corrosion can develop over 24–72 hours and cause failure later. "It worked for a day" is a common story we hear before a second failure takes the phone out permanently.
What Happens During Water Damage Repair?
When you bring a water-damaged iPhone or Samsung to MNM Computers in Citrus Heights, here's what our technicians do:
- Disassemble the device to access the logic board and all internal components
- Ultrasonic cleaning or isopropyl alcohol flush to remove mineral deposits and corrosion
- Inspection under magnification to identify damaged components
- Component replacement for anything that's failed (capacitors, charging ICs, etc.)
- Reassembly and testing — we confirm full function before returning your device
Does Water Damage Repair Always Work?
Honesty matters to us: not every water-damaged phone can be saved. The outcome depends on:
- How long the phone was submerged
- Whether it was powered on while wet
- The type of liquid (pool water and saltwater cause more corrosion than fresh water)
- How quickly you brought it in for professional cleaning
That said, we successfully restore the majority of water-damaged devices that come in within 24 hours. Even if the device can't be saved, we can often recover your photos, contacts, and other data.
